The Residency
The Residency, a historical landmark in Lucknow, was once the residence of the British Resident General and is now a popular tourist attraction. It comprises a group of buildings within a beautiful enclosure, overlooking the River Gomti. The site played a significant role in the Siege of Lucknow in 1857, and the ruins of that event can still be seen. The complex includes the Baillie guard gate, the Treasury ruins, a memorial plaque honoring brave troops, and the graves of around 2000 soldiers. Today, the Residency serves as a government office, housing a museum, the tomb of Saadat Ali Khan, Kaisarbagh Palace, an observatory, a mosque, an Imambara, and other structures.
Construction of the Residency began in the late 1700s under Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah and was completed by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan. It later became a hub for British personnel. During the First War of Independence in 1857, the Residency faced heavy damage. It now stands as a testament to that revolt. The architectural features include a Banquet Hall, a fountain, the house of Dr Frayer (used as a hiding place during the revolt), and the imposing three-story main building with a memorial cross dedicated to MG Sir John Inglis and his wife Julia, who died in the Siege of Lucknow.
